Ryan is one of the sweetest and calmest dogs I have ever known. He loves attention, like any dog, (especially rubs around his neck and ears) but he’s happy to hang with the other dogs and chill. He likes to be wherever people are, and loves to be with other dogs. He should not go to a home where he is the only dog.
If the usual steps are taken for any dog when the humans leave, like leaving a Kong with BilJac or peanut butter, he suffers little or no separation anxiety. He will happily sleep next to my other two greyhounds during the day. In the car, he lays down quietly soon after getting his bearings. He delights in lying on his bed outside when the weather is good.
Ryan is gentle with the cats and mostly acts as if they don’t exist. He’s been seen to rub noses with cats, though. Of course, with any greyhound, outside cats are prey just like any other small animal.
I have not seen Ryan run and don’t think he would prefer to due to a break to his rear hock in 2002, and so walks are very important. He will not get any exercise if he’s just left to run in the yard, like younger dogs might. He is fantastic on a leash and loves his walks, although the walks can’t be too long. The break in his rear hock has also caused problems with arthritis. During the winter months, he’ll sometimes need prescription medicine to help with the discomfort. Ryan is about to have the dental of all dentals and will have pearly whites when he’s done. It will be very important to keep up on his dental hygiene once his dental is completed.
Ryan is simply a fantastic dog, calm, and with fewer idiosyncrasies than I’ve ever seen in a dog. He’s just a love and would make a fantastic addition to a home with at least one other dog and children who are old enough to understand dog space. He’s also perfect for a home that treasures their cats, as I do.
